New Media Breakfast #nmb , Glasgow Friday 24/9/10

Well I went to the #nmb this morning. I got up at 5.20am, got ready and headed on train at 6.30 (5 minutes from my house).

Got round to Royal Exchange Square easily but couldn't find 29 for a minute, it was my first time at the #nmb. I got up into main area and was pleased to see Kyle (after months of listening to social media podcast).

I got my fizz and bacon roll (which were really nice) and set my #iphone 3gs on #nmb as search (which helped later). Next Gordon started the event. As people will discover I do moderate comments on my own blog and check comments on forums and facebook which the rugby club has. I even typed into the #nmb search (and yes I am trying to change my twitter picture, #iphone pic is too large to upload (atleast on normal settings).

I understand that unmoderated clause legally I probably wouldn't have. I also wish my members would interact with me more on twitter, but facebook seems to be better for our message.

Video will become bigger, yes. I wondered on twitter, will the newtwitter help it get even more users?

Glasgowdotcom give free advertising to charities, that was good to hear for organisations in Glasgow. I enjoyed the people around the table with me (you might spot us in 1 of kyles photo)

It was a good event and got my things done in Glasgow after it.

Now I have a birthday present to deliver.

Social Media Podcast 14

Well its podcast time again. Kjmurdoch & Gordonwhite do there regular podcast.

I wouldn't allow a junior for a company to do things for a company. I know when I do stuff for Cumnock RFC I usually have to get a lot of agreement for me to do stuff. We just started using teamer which is a way to text/email players for the club for free (apart from USA). The president referred it to me to check out. I liked it but I still needed to talk to Head Coach that he wants me to use this to talk to the players.

Others things like emailing the local paper which in first instance I thought I might get in trouble for I got praised for. You do have to have a person that you trust to do this for you. Thats why I am the Cumnock RFC Webmaster. You have to know the boundaries that you can go to. There are things which ofcourse I do know which I don't put out publically.

Iain talking about tweetdeck and hootsuite is unfortunately not my area. I know Three just gave me twitter for free until end of march, but its just the mobile site.

I dont have an iphone but I do have audioboo via phoneboo. I linked it to my housephone, not that anybody has said anything to me (I have left it on the bottom of my blog). I just did a phoneboo asking about Wales vs Scotland, lets see if I get an answer for this one. I am on #googlewave since nov/dec and not many people are using it but googlebuzz already feels it has more people using it.

The talk about people using social media at work is going to be a continual subject. After a good discussion with Josh_biggs on twitter, its not as easy as it looks.

You guys are right about learning these new systems and what you want to do. Gordon I am sure Iain isnt your only follower, haha! I do know other people like the sky app, so I know people like it, right Alex.

Social Media Podcast Edition 9

I didn't get to the newmediabrekkie in Glasgow and after reading a couple of blogs and twitter posts on #nmb because I was working that morning. I was interested to listen to the latest Social Media Podcast which would hopefully cover what happened from the podcastmatters team.

During the event I get tweet Craig McGill who told me what was happening and that he is not the target market, that got me thinking that I thought he would be. After reading Iain M Hepburn and Craigs blogs

So firstly listen to the social media podcast which is on itunes They are advertising it at the top of the social media podcast page (scroll down to find feed and the rss feeds)(it's edition 9).

I was glad to hear Gordon explaining what he meant by newspapers (as in the physical paper (not online)).

A thank you as well to Gordon for retweeting me saying I had listened to the last podcast.

I am basically still interested as it does help if you are focused when you are interacting with social media.

For my lonely rugby club I do twitter (along with everything else I tweet on), proboards, blogs and now facebook fan page and it does take up my time updating them all and I feel it is getting too large for me (I am not alone). I have had some news I should have a webhost for the original website, which would let me remove proboard and focus it even more. I would keep my blog as I can feed the blog entries into the facebook page (within about an hour). The facebook page is already more popular than the amount of members on the proboard after only 1 week (and my viewing figures on the blog are not down).

Any advice guys.

Itunes and podcasts

Well I downloaded itunes on my computer last night and decided to download some podcasts I used to listen to.

The main feed was the Tartanpodcast

I listened to Tartanpodcast #122 first. Mark Hunter was talking to one of the team with The LaFontaines, they are a band from Motherwell. I actually saw them in Market Inn in Ayr back at the start of May I think, They were something new. Raping that style was briliant. It was very good to listen and see them and even better to hear them get their own tartanpodcast.

Next I listened to #121. It was going back through his history a small bit. I really enjoyed this as well. As always Mark got some good tunes. I hope he is enjoying doing this at home now.

Next I listened to Sleepy Sunday #33, its the first time I have listened to this and it was quite good as well. Mark certinally is good at producing these. It was nice and short.

The last of the current Marks tartanpodcasts was a Sleepy Sunday #34. He was talking to somebody from Alabama and I was a bit worried when they started talking about church, they quickly moved from that. As most people realise when I am working I work almost every Sunday, so I don't really get to church much, but I don't like putting it on other peoples faces. The last 2 Sundays I was off I went to rugby ofcourse. Mark quickly moved from that and I enjoyed the rest of the conversation and other aspects of that podcast.

I hope Mark keeps these up. I don't really want to go anywhere near talking about my Sundays though.

Finally I listened to Social Media Podcast number #4 with Cliff Ravenscraft. It was very interesting. I dont think I will hear another one for a while since Mark has left that company, again Mark good luck in the future (and your family).

It gives me a few lessons on this, seeing as I am new at this blogging thing.

I was a lot better than the rubbish which is on the TV at the moment.

I have sent a few messages on twitter to Mark at his twitter address telling him what I think.

More about me

I thought I had better add some more details about me, instead of just leaving at the top of my profile.

I am on the committee of Cumnock Rugby Club, both the "big club" cttee and after May I joined the mini/midi cttee as well.

At that AGM I was asked what I am and I am the webmaster. Being at both committees mean I get a lot of information I need.

So thats me I cover from 8 years old to 50 something year olds in the rugby.

Unfortunately my health went worse this year so I just keep busy at rugby but I still get up around 8am most mornings.

I use a lot of social networking sites, mostly I admit for rugby.
