This is some from his entry:-
Possible subjects for the blog could be:
general website advice
getting started with social media
social media branding/visual identity tips
web design process (on new sites)
logo development process
I like the first three as especially discussed at twitayr, not everyone out there uses the tools well. People tend to need advice about websites, social media is needed by most companies unless there coca cola or someone that size. Some big organisations dont get social media.
For example (but not the only one) is Prestwick Airport and its twitter feed
They really dont bar 1 example talk about flight information for itself, it could make itself a lot more useful or really a lot. Look at the amount of people following Glasgow Airport and the info. So you can see you can do social media in various ways, sometimes just for piecemeal.
I dont know how many will want to learn web design processes for new sites or developing logo. Branding is important though. I know it took me about 20 hours initially to learn a useful amount of web design, so I am not sure people will want to sit around for that.
I am sure Iain you know what kind of pricing you need to deploy and seeing as this aint my job doing it for other people, I cant really help.
Other guys and girls out there, give Iain your thoughts. Iain is on twitter and even google+
Thanks for posting this Thomas, I really appreciate you taking the time to do so.
ReplyDeleteI had anticipated that the first three in the list may be the most popular. I should point out though, that I do not see myself as any type of social media "expert". However being a web designer, I am frequently asked by clients for general advice.
I think the whole buzz around Twitter and Facebook can make the non-experienced a bit wary.
I would most likely offer small tips, or general best practice. (just don't look at my Twitter feed!)
All joking apart, it is obvious that some businesses are doing it wrong, and just some small changes to the way they approach it could help.
It is interesting that you mention Prestwick Airport, I will need to have look at following them.
As for general website advice, every day I see the same mistakes, and not just on DIY sites. So that is something I feel should be addressed.
In terms of my suggestions for insight into the web design process, and logo development. I feel I should say that these wouldn't be step by step guides. I'm not here to teach anyone at the moment, there are far too many designers out there blogging for that purpose, and that is what I'd like to avoid.
What I'd really rather do is demystify the business. I still think there are a lot of people in business that are apprehensive about hiring a designer, especially a freelancer. So I'd like to shed a bit of light on that. Give a brief idea of how a design was decided on, or how I approached a specific subject.
Short and informative. A lot unlike this comment!
Anyway...thanks again for the write up!
If anyone else has any comments, please feel free to read my original post (http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=305512939465114) and join in.
Cheers,
Iain.
